UEFA Is Exploring the Possibility of Holding Euro 2021 in Russia
OREANDA-NEWS. Russia can become a single host for the European Football Championship, which has been postponed to the summer of 2021 due to the wide spread of the coronavirus infection. This was reported by the French newspaper Le Parisien. The publication notes that the initially considered format, which involves holding matches in 12 countries, is unrealistic now due to pandemic.
According to newspaper sources, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), which organizes Euro 2020, is guided by Russia’s experience in hosting the World Cup of 2018. UEFA is also considering the possibility of abandoning the holding of Euro 2020 matches in Baku due to the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to Le Parisien, at the beginning of the pandemic Russia offered the organizers of Euro 2020 to host the tournament on the originally scheduled dates, from June 12 to July 12, 2020. Then the representatives of the country pointed to the low level of COVID-19 morbidity in Russia.
