OREANDA-NEWS After the announcement of the preliminary results of the presidential election, which Emmanuel Macron won, protests began in major cities of France. They turned into riots, the police used tear gas. Footage of clashes between those dissatisfied with the election results and law enforcement officers appears on the Web.

Demonstrators in Toulouse took to the streets with banners that read «Neither Macron nor Le Pen — revolution!». The protesters called on fellow citizens to stand up against the election results.

In addition to the riots, there was another incident in Paris. The police opened fire on a car in the city center. According to the portal Actu, the driver stopped at the request of the guards, but during the inspection he pressed the gas and drove towards the police. Law enforcement officers opened fire in self-defense — the driver of the car and one of his passengers were fatally wounded, another person in the car was wounded in the arm. It is not yet known whether the incident is connected with the presidential election.

Many world leaders congratulated Macron on his election victory. US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky delivered congratulations. The latter called Macron a «true friend» in his congratulation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a telegram to his French counterpart congratulating him on his re-election for a second term. According to the Kremlin website, the head of the Russian state wished him health, prosperity and success in the presidential field.
