OREANDA-NEWS. Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas met with Yang Jing, the State Councillor of the People’s Republic of China today, to discuss how to make better use of the potential of cooperation between the two countries in order to increase trade volume.

This year, China and Estonia will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to Prime Minister Rõivas, Estonia appreciates that China never recognised the Soviet occupation and annexation of Estonia. Rõivas recalled his meeting with the Chinese president and prime minister in November of last year and expressed the hope that important bilateral meetings would take place within the framework of China-CEEC Summit in Riga this year.

Prime Minister Rõivas noted that when he visited China on a business mission at the end of last year, he was surprised to learn how many Estonian and Chinese companies had already found common interests and started cooperating.

When speaking about tourism, Rõivas stated that China is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations for Estonia. The Prime Minister emphasized that direct air service between Estonia and China would provide, in the long term, an important impetus for increasing tourism between the two countries.

The Prime Minister and State Councillor also discussed cooperation between CEEC and China in implementing the new silk road project and Estonian-Chinese joint projects in the transit sector. For example, Estonian ports to be used for transporting Chinese goods. Omniva has already established cooperation with a Chinese partner.  According to Rõivas, Estonia could be a transit gate to Europe for China. When talking about major cooperation projects, the joint project of Eesti Energia and China in Jordan was also discussed.

Rõivas and Yang also discussed cooperation in exporting Estonian agricultural produce to China, which, according to Rõivas, is also an area with considerable market potential thanks to the high quality of Estonian foodstuffs. Rõivas said that Estonia had completed preparations for opening access to the Chinese market for Estonian dairy products and, hopefully, the first products will be soon available in the shops of China.

Rõivas also presented Estonia’s e-governance solutions and digital services to Yang.
