OREANDA-NEWS. The European Union officially extended the economic sanctions against Russia imposed in 2014 by six months. This is announced in a statement by the EU, released on December 17.

“The Council today decided to prolong the restrictive measures currently targeting specific sectors of the Russian economy until 31 July 2021. These sanctions were imposed in 2014 in response to Russia’s actions destabilising the situation in Ukraine,” the message reads.

On December 10, it became known that the summit of the heads of state of the European Union decided to extend the economic sanctions against the Russian Federation. The previously introduced restrictions will expire on January 31, 2021. At the same day it was reported that the decision was made at the current summit without discussion. It should be formally approved by the Council of the European Union.
