OREANDA-NEWS. The Center for Public Relations of the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) reported on June 17 that officers detained two members of the gangs led by Shamil Basayev and Ibn al-Khattab, who participated in the attack on the Republic of Dagestan in 1999.

Evidence gathered with the help of the Investigative Committee of Russia indicated that natives of the Stavropol Krai, 48-year-old Surtlanbek Adzhinyazov and 51-year-old Ruslanbek Arslanov, were involved in the crime. The Center informed that in the near future they will be charged under the article of the Criminal Code of Russia “Attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer.”

In August–September 1999, members of the gangs of Basayev and al-Khattab carried out an armed attack on Dagestan. More than 280 military, law enforcement officers and civilians were killed, more than 800 people were injured.

According to the FSB, the search for all accomplices in the attack continues. An official representative of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Svetlana Petrenko, noted that from 1999 to 2020, more than 80 participants in the attack were convicted and sentenced to up to 19 years in prison. 28 criminals are still wanted.
