OREANDA-NEWS The Constitution of Georgia does not recognize the existence of South Ossetia, so it is desirable that the European Union exclude this name from official documents. This was stated by the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia Nikoloz Samkharadze at a joint meeting of the parliamentary committees on European integration and international relations.

He commented on the report from the representative of the European Parliament Sven Mikser. According to Samkharadze, the term "South Ossetia" was allegedly introduced by Joseph Stalin in 1922.

"Therefore, my request and call is to discuss together how we can remove this term from your official documents at all. It is unpleasant when the European Union or some other state uses the name of Stalin's times," Samkharadze said.

Samkharadze added that Tbilisi can send an official appeal on this occasion, if necessary.

Recall that South Ossetia became part of the Georgian SSR in 1922 as an Autonomous Region of South Ossetia (later the South Ossetian Autonomous Region, the Autonomous Region of South Ossetia).

In 1991, Georgia seceded from the Soviet Union, and the leadership of the new republic abolished all the laws of the USSR, including the "Decree on the formation of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region as part of the GSSR." Nevertheless, official Tbilisi calls this territory the "Tskhinvali region" and believes that it should be ceded to Georgia.
