OREANDA-NEWS. The Libyan National Army (LNA) under the command of Marshal Khalifa Haftar entered the city of Sirte.

A source in the LNA told to reporters of RIA Novosti news agency that the seaport of the city was taken under control. According to the interlocutor of journalists, during the first stage of the operation, the LNA carried out amphibious assault and captured the port. He reported that Haftar’s military units took possession of the military base, some urban areas and “now are being moving to the city center.”

Al Arabiya channel reported that the LNA gained control of the third largest district of Sirte. It is noted that Sirte located in the center of the northern coast of Libya was almost completely destroyed in 2011, when supporters of Muammar Gaddafi resisted opposition forces. During the riots after the overthrow of Gaddafi, the city was occupied by the Islamic State terrorist group until 2016.
