OREANDA-NEWS. The Mufti of Moscow Ildar Alyautdinov said to the journalists that the legalization of polygamy in all Russia would solve a number of social problems caused by a significant numerical advantage of women in comparison with men.

Earlier, Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin, the head of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation, proposed to legalize polygamy in Muslim regions of the country. In his opinion, polygamy is much better than “having 40 lovers and not having any responsibility” to them and illegitimate children.

“I believe that polygamy must be legitimized. This practice has a right to exist, especially since some religions, including Islam, allow this,” Alyautdinov said.

The Mufti reminded that the number of women in Russia exceeds the number of men by 10 million, and there are many situations in Russia where “women remain widows or divorced.” He added that de facto polygamy exists in some Russian regions, for example in Tatarstan, Chechnya, and Dagestan.

“The legalization of polygamy would become a guarantee of women’s rights. In social aspect such women are completely unprotected today. Despite the fact that Sharia law is the basis of Muslim life, civil law relations in our country are regulated on the basis of Russian law. Therefore, it’s important to create a protection mechanism at the legislative level, so that women could be second full-fledged spouses, and it will help solve many social problems. In addition, there would be much less sinfulness and fornication, which are spreading so rapidly now,” said Alyautdinov.

He stressed that these matters should be considered only by competent authorities, with the involvement of experts in Islamic law. “Polygamy is a complex system where it is important to take into account not only the rights, but also the responsibilities of each spouse. In this case, the big responsibility lies on the man – financial support, equal spending of free time between families, raising children and so on. Therefore, each case should be considered separately, it is important to take into account different circumstances of life,” the Mufti of Moscow resumed.
