OREANDA-NEWS. US Defense Department chief Mark Esper reported that the United States could redeploy the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of Ground Forces from Germany to another European country closer to Russia. This was negotiated with the authorities of Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and the Baltic countries.

“Indeed, since that announcement, as well as the signing of the Defense Cooperation Agreement with Poland, my recent meetings with the Defense Ministers from Romania and Bulgaria, and correspondence received from Baltic States, there is now the real opportunity of keeping the 2nd Cavalry Regiment forward in some of these countries on an enduring basis,” Esper said, speaking at the Atlantic Council in Washington. According to the politician, these measures are necessary for the NATO to contain Russia.

The US Secretary of Defense also announced Washington’s plans to increase the number of intermediate-range missiles in Europe and Asia. According to Esper, this should be made due to the increase in such weapons in Russia and China in violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
