OREANDA-NEWS. Armenia should sign a new security agreement with the Russian Federation, including a clause on the creation of a second military base, which will be deployed in the Syunik Province, bordering with Azerbaijan in the south. Edmon Marukyan, leader of the opposition political party Bright Armenia wrote about this on December 23 on his Facebook page.

The military base will, on the one hand, support the effective, dynamic activities of the Russian peacekeeping forces in Nagorno-Karabakh, and on the other hand, it will become a guarantor of long-term peace and security in the region, the politician explained. According to Marukyan, the experience of the 102nd Russian military base in the city of Gyumri is a guarantee of the effectiveness of this security mechanism. For decades, this base has ensured the inviolability of the Armenian–Turkish border, he noted.
