OREANDA-NEWS. June 06, 2012.  The government and the media should work together to develop a mature civil society in Ukraine, President Viktor Yanukovych said at his meeting with journalists on the occasion of Journalist Day.

"You are one of the best informed members of our society, can and have the right to deduce, point out problems,” said Viktor Yanukovych.

The President also called on journalists to present information in a balanced manner and avoid being drawn into politics.

Viktor Yanukovych praised journalists’ active role in drawing public attention to such problems as the demolition of historical buildings in Kyiv, high hotel prices on the eve of EURO 2012, inconveniences due to the recent cancellation of passenger train service at night.

"Journalism is a mirror where politicians see themselves. The voice of the press is the voice of conscience of society. Government effectiveness depends on its ability to respond to citizens’ complains and, above all, to those of journalists," Viktor Yanukovych said.
