OREANDA-NEWS. The European Union will not tolerate human rights violations, Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Asselborn said. He added, that the lowest point in EU-Russia relations has not yet been reached. This is how the politician commented on the situation related to the hospitalization and detention of the opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

EU foreign ministers will discuss actions against Russia in connection with the Navalny case. Brussels does not intend to calm down on this issue, Jean Asselborn said in an interview with the media group «RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland», published on Monday, February 22.

The new penalties should be legally unquestionable, Asselborn said. At the same time, the Luxembourg minister admits, that the sanctions will not have the proper effect on Moscow. The head of the Russian mission to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, assured, that Moscow «will be ready to respond» in the event of new «illegitimate unilateral» measures. The EU's decisions on Russia are «illogical and strikingly politicized», said Chizhov in interview with the German newspaper «Die Welt».
