OREANDA-NEWS. Belgian court decided to suspend the extradition of Catalan politicians Carles Puigdemont and Antoni Comin, whose international and European arrest warrants were issued by a Spanish judge.

“Belgian justice recognizes our immunity and decides to suspend the arrest and extradition warrant!” Puigdemont wrote on his Twitter page.

The suspension of the extradition case is connected with the fact that Puigdemont and Comin were recognized as European deputies and received immunity. If the European Parliament will deprive them of immunity at the request of the Supreme Court of Spain, the case may be resumed.

Puigdemon and Comin were elected to the European Parliament from the list of the Catalan coalition Free for Europe. However, by law, in order to receive mandates, they had to take an oath of allegiance to the constitution in Spain, where they were wanted. They did not come to Madrid for the oath ceremony and sent a lawyer with notarized acts of oath. The electoral commission refused to recognize them as sufficient grounds for including Puigdemont and Comin in the list of European parliamentarians from Spain.
