OREANDA-NEWS. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borel, called Russia a "dangerous neighbor", but called for keeping open channels of communication to resolve issues of mutual interest.

The EU High Representative arrived at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday to participate in the second day of NATO Council meetings at the level of foreign ministers, during which the alliance's relationship with Russia will be discussed.

Borrell said: “We must discuss channels of communication with Russia. Russia is a neighbor, a dangerous neighbor, but we must share with them some issues on which we have common interests, such as a nuclear deal with Iran or climate change. But together so we must contain and oppose Russia. "

Earlier, the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy said that Moscow is "more and more" away from Brussels. According to him, Russia has embarked on a course of confrontation with the European Union.

Borrell also recalled the "five principles" of interaction with Russia, among which he called the strict observance of the Minsk agreements, the establishment of cooperation with the Eastern partners of the EU, ensuring the energy security of Europe, the strengthening of European-Russian cooperation regarding the international situation that concerns the interests of the EU, and support civil society in Russia.
