OREANDA-NEWS. The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus refused to register the ex-head of Belgazprombank Viktar Babaryka as a presidential candidate.

The head of the Commission, Lidia Yermoshina, said that the reason for the refusal was a letter from the State Control Committee about illegal activities of Babaryka and illegally obtained income not reflected in tax declaration. The CEC also mentioned that the politician used the help of a foreign state (participation of employees of Belgazprombank, shareholders of which are Russian Gazprom and Gazprombank, in the initiative group of Babaryko). Babaryka Sr. and his son Eduard are under arrest.

It is also reported that seven people filed documents for registration as presidential candidates: Viktar Babaryka, Andrej Dzmitryjeu, Hanna Kanapackaja, Alexander Lukashenko, Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Valery Tsepkalo, and Sergey Cherechen. Six candidates went through the signature verification; Tsepkalo did not gain necessary number.

The presidential election in Belarus is scheduled for August 9.
