The actions of the Belarusian authorities in response to the demonstrations after the presidential election are “disproportionate & unacceptable.” This was stated by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on his Twitter page. “Essential that Belarus Presidential Election votes in are counted accurately and results reflect people’s the choice,” the politician stressed.

“The election night was marred with disproportionate and unacceptable state violence against peaceful protesters. This reportedly resulted in the loss of life of one citizen and many others have been injured,” a joint statement by Borrell and the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, says. “We condemn the violence and call for the immediate release of all detained during last night.”

The government of Germany also criticized the repressions against the Belarusian protesters. According to cabinet spokesman Steffen Seibert, the presidential election in Belarus did not meet the minimum standards for democratic process. “This is unacceptable,” he concluded.
