OREANDA-NEWS. Hungary should reverse the decision to close the borders, taken due to the threat of a new wave of the coronavirus pandemic, since it violates the integrity of the Schengen Area. This was declared by European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, on her Twitter page.

“Today [European Commissioner for Justice] Didier Reynders and I are sending a letter to the Hungarian Government recalling the importance of the integrity of the Schengen area and of applying border measures in a non-discriminatory way to all EU citizens and residents. Any measures that do not comply with those fundamental principles of EU law should of course be immediately retracted,” she wrote. According to Johansson, the European Commission will soon contact the Hungarian authorities to request additional information on the decision to close the borders.

Hungary has banned entry to foreigners since September 1. It became the first EU country to re-close its borders after the Schengen states eased most of the restrictions on movement between them in June.
