OREANDA-NEWS. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during a telephone conversation agreed to reduce tensions at the border as soon as possible.

This was reported by the Foreign Ministry of China. “The parties agreed to reduce the tension of the situation as soon as possible, and to ensure peace and tranquility in the border zone on the basis of the agreement reached by the two countries,” the statement says.

The clashes between the Chinese and Indian military began on the evening of June 15 in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh. Several dozen servicemen were killed. Both sides accused each other of the aggression.

There is a long-standing territorial dispute between China and India over the ownership of a mountainous area in northern Kashmir, as well as almost 60 thousand square kilometers in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. The actual control line runs in the Ladakh region. In 1962, the dispute escalated into a border war. In 1993 and 1996, China and India signed peacekeeping agreements on disputed territories.
