OREANDA-NEWS. German Minister of Health, a member of the Christian Democratic Union Jens Spahn is considering becoming a candidate for the post of Federal Chancellor. This was reported on January 8 by the newspaper Bild, citing sources in political circles.

According to the tabloid, in recent weeks, the politician has discussed this scenario several times during telephone conversations with influential representatives of the Christian Democratic Union.

Currently, there are three candidates for the presidency of the political party: Minister-President of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet, the former head of the Bundestag faction Friedrich Merz, and the chairman of the parliamentary Foreign Policy Committee Norbert Rottgen. A new leader will be elected at the convention scheduled for January 15–16.

Now the party is headed by Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who replaced Angela Merkel in this position. Merkel continues to remain Chancellor, but she will not go for the next term. The next election to the Bundestag, after which a new government will be formed, will be held on September 26, 2021.
