OREANDA-NEWS. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier declared that history should not become a weapon in the hands of different persons, as it is unacceptable to manipulate it.

The politician stated this during his speech in the Bundestag, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp Auschwitz. “We must counteract the situation when the memory is exploited. Historiography is not a political problem; it needs freedom and an open exchange of opinions of historians. History should not become a weapon!” Steinmeier said.

On January 29, events dedicated to the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz are held in Germany. They were visited by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. Speaking in the parliament, he recalled that Germany and Israel are partners. “Together we defend our values: against anti-Semitism and xenophobia and against destruction,” Rivlin said.
