OREANDA-NEWS. The German authorities, together with other countries, will try to convince the US leadership to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Open Skies. This was stated by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

“The decision of the US administration will take effect in six months. During this time, we will work intensively together with like-minded people to force the United States to reconsider its decision,” the politician said. According to the German Minister, the Treaty on Open Skies is an important part of the European arms control system. “This contributes to security and peace in almost entire Northern Hemisphere,” Maas added.

He also declared that Germany would continue to comply with the terms of the Treaty and called on Russia to return to full implementation of its clauses. According to Foreign Minister, there have been difficulties with the implementation of the Treaty in recent years because of the actions of Moscow. Nevertheless, Maas believes that this does not justify withdrawal from the agreement. “Together with my colleagues from France, Poland and the United Kingdom, I have repeatedly told about this to Secretary of State Pompeo,” he said.
