OREANDA-NEWS. The European Union will sooner or later face the need to impose sanctions against Turkey, since Ankara is unlikely to abandon its behaviour in the Mediterranean region. This opinion was expressed by the Minister of National Defense of Greece, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos during the video seminar of the German Marshall Fund.

The politician said he understands the concern of some European partners that the introduction of restrictions will cause a harsh reaction from Ankara, but sooner or later, Europe will face the inevitability of imposing sanctions, because Turkey is unlikely to abandon its provocative behaviour. According to Panagiotopoulos, it is worth not only taking into account Ankara’s open threats against Athens and Nicosia, but also its behaviour towards Paris and other players in the Mediterranean. At the same time, the Minister expressed the opinion that the Turkish economy has a weak position and restrictions will cause further damage to it.
