OREANDA-NEWS. Henry Kissinger who was the Secretary of State of the United States of America from 1973 till 1977 said that authorities of China and the USA should accept the fact that they none of them is able to win in their confrontation.

The politician warned that the conflict between Washington and Beijing will lead to “catastrophic outcome” which will be “worse than world wars that ruined European civilisation.” To prevent this, the two countries, according to Kissinger, must resolve the disagreements.

“It never happened before that two major countries in different parts of the universe were in similar position,” the diplomat noted, speaking at the event hosted by the National Committee on US China Relations. A 96-year-old veteran of American diplomacy added: “It’s no longer possible to think that one side can dominate the other. They have to get used to the fact that they have that kind of a rivalry”.

In addition, Kissinger explained the difference in the approaches of the USA and China to the issues of our time. He said the Americans are pragmatic, they believe that solving today’s problems will lead to a final solution, while the Chinese believe that solving one problem gives rise to others.

Being President Nixon’s National Security Advisor, Kissinger initiated the normalization of relations between the United States and communist China. In 1972, Nixon visited the People’s Republic of China, where he met with Mao Zedong, the Chairman of the Communist Party of the country.
