OREANDA-NEWS. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko explained to Ann Linde and Pekka Haavisto, the foreign ministers of Sweden and Finland, why the opposition did not go into parliament, and asked Western countries not to finance its representatives.

According to the press service of the Belarusian leader, Lukashenko revealed the contents of the meeting with ministers in negotiations with the delegation of the Kaliningrad Region, where Russian Ambassador Dmitry Mezentsev noted the successful holding of parliamentary elections in Belarus.

“You think so. But they (the foreign ministers of Sweden and Finland. – Ed.) say: “Why aren't there pro-Western oppositionists? There were three people in the past, but not a single one now.” The reason is not me. If people do not support them, what can I do?” Lukashenko said.

He also called on the West not to provide funding to opposition representatives. “…Don’t give them money. …They buy cars, build mansions. Much money is coming. We all see it. About what we don’t see, the Russians will tell us where it comes from. It passes through Lithuania, Poland usually. Americans, Germans are financing them. They are living well. What the hell do they need a power, a headache?” the Belarusian leader said.

On November 17, elections to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus were held. 110 deputies were elected in 110 electoral districts; opposition representatives did not go into the new convocation of parliament. Observer missions of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization called the elections free, open and democratic. At the same time, monitoring participants from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe mission stated that the elections did not meet democratic standards, and noted a violation of the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the country’s Constitution.
