OREANDA-NEWS. President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, announced the need to amend the country’s Constitution with the preliminary transfer of powers to the level of local authorities.

According to the politician, the text of the new law will be prepared in two years. “Several options have already been offered to me, but they are not good. People are simply afraid to make more drastic changes to the Constitution. I think we need to do this. Even before the adoption of the Constitution, we will do a lot in terms of transferring powers down, to chairmen of the district executive committees, governors,” Lukashenko said. The head of state added that he considers the return to Belarus’s Constitution of 1994 a “backward movement”.

Presidential elections will be held in Belarus on August 9. Lukashenko is running for the sixth term.
