OREANDA-NEWS. German Chancellor Angela Merkel does not exclude the possibility of imposing sanctions against the construction of the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2  in response to the poisoning of Russian opposition politician Aleksey Navalny.

This was reported by Reuters agency with reference to Steffen Seibert, a spokesman of the German government. According to Seibert, Merkel considers it wrong to exclude any of the options from the discussion. He clarified that it is too early to say what the European Union’s response to the poisoning of Navalny should be.

On September 6, German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who replaced Merkel as head of the Christian Democratic Union, announced that the authorities would consider the future of the Nord Stream 2 in connection with the poisoning of Navalny. “I have always said that I was not happy with the Nord Stream 2 project,” Kramp-Karrenbauer said, noting that further actions of the German authorities depend on the Russian side.
