OREANDA-NEWS. On December 23, Moldovan Prime Minister Ion Chicu said that he would resign in order to hold early parliamentary election, which the opposition insists on. He made this statement at a joint briefing with the incumbent President of the country Igor Dodon and the speaker of the parliament Zinaida Greceanii.

“Today I will resign, respectively, together with the government, so that this procedure can be launched as quickly as possible,” Chicu said. According to him, the current cabinet will continue to serve until the parliamentary election and the appointment of a new prime minister.

As Greceanii said, the parliamentary meeting scheduled for today to discuss a vote of no confidence in the government of Chicu initiated by the opposition will not take place. According to her, it makes no sense in connection with the fact that the prime minister announced his resignation.

President-elect Maia Sandu insisted on the resignation of the government. Dodon also supported this idea, but he stated that because of the pandemic there is a need to postpone the parliamentary election.
