OREANDA-NEWSUS Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in an interview with the Colombian television channel Caracol TV said that Washington and its partners in Central America and Europe are developing a strategy for a change of power in Venezuela. According to him, Washington’s goal is the resignation of the current head of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, and the subsequent holding of “free and fair” presidential elections in the country.

As an example of the correctness of the strategy developed by Washington, he recalled the collapse of the USSR.“I remember how the former US Secretary of State Baker told me that until the fall of the Soviet Union, no one believed that such a strategy worked. And then it worked”, said Pompeo.

The situation in Venezuela escalated in January 2019, when the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Juan Guado, proclaimed himself the interim president of the country. Soon, the United States, Canada, most Latin American countries, including Guatemala, a number of EU countries and other states officially recognized Guaido as interim president of Venezuela. President Nicolas Maduro called the incident an attempted coup and announced the severance of relations with the United States.
