OREANDA-NEWS. The United States will withdraw from the Treaty on Open Skies in six months. This is announced in a statement by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, published on the website of the US Department of State.

“Tomorrow, the United States will submit notice of its decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Open Skies to the Treaty Depositaries and to all other States Parties to the Treaty. Effective six months from tomorrow, the United States will no longer be a party to the Treaty,” the message reads.

Pompeo added that the USA may reconsider its plans to withdraw from the Treaty if Russia “returns to full compliance” with the agreement.

According to Article XV of the Treaty on Open Skies, a state party may withdraw from it only upon notification to other participants not later than six months before. After that, other countries should convene a conference to assess the consequences of such a withdrawal.
