OREANDA-NEWS. Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq Adil Abdul-Mahdi said that he intends to resign after bloody riots in which hundreds of people died. It became known from a statement released by the press service of the head of government.

Earlier, Iraq’s largest political forces called on the country’s parliament to hold an extraordinary meeting and declare a vote of no confidence in the government after two month of demonstrations. Nasr (Victory) coalition, led by former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, the parliamentary block Sairun, one of the leaders of which is the influential Shiite politician Muktada al-Sadr, the Shiite party Dawa (Call) and others supported the initiative.

“I will send an official letter to the House of Representatives requesting the resignation of the post of head of government,” Abdul-Mahdi’s statement says. The Prime Minister also stated that he had heard a message from Marja (Shiite religious authority) about the difficult conditions in the country and the inability of the authorized bodies to cope with the situation over the past two months.

Since the beginning of October, demonstrators in Iraq during protests demand the resignation of the government, the fight against corruption and unemployment, as well as better living conditions. The media reported that as a result of clashes and riots accompanying the protest, more than 300 people died and about 15 thousand were injured.

At the end of October, Iraqi President Barham Salih announced that Abdul-Mahdi agreed to resign.
