OREANDA-NEWS. Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the situation on the Tajik-Afghan border during a telephone conversation with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon. This was reported on the Kremlin's website.

The heads of state admitted that the situation on the Tajik-Afghan border is tense now. Putin confirmed his readiness to provide Tajikistan with the necessary support both bilaterally and within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

The presidents also expressed their mutual intention to strengthen bilateral relations. Putin and Rahmon agreed to continue further contacts.

Earlier it was reported that over a thousand soldiers of the Afghan government troops retreated to the territory of Tajikistan under the onslaught of militants of the Taliban movement banned in Russia. This was reported in the press center of the border troops of the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan.

According to the Tajik military, on the night of July 4 to 5, the Taliban took full control of the counties of Khokhon, Shikai, Nusai, Mohimai, Shugnon and Sulton Ishkashim of Badakhshan province, which share a common border with Tajikistan, TASS reported.
