OREANDA-NEWS  The Ministry of Justice appealed the decision of the European court of human rights (ECHR) concerning the payment of compensation in the amount of almost €50 thousand to participants Pussy Riot. About it reports a press-service of the Ministry.

"The decision of the European court of human rights "Alekhine and others against Russia", issued in July 2018, was appealed by the authorities of the Russian Federation in the prescribed manner," the Ministry said.

The ECHR verdict was delivered in mid-July. According to the decree, the Russian authorities are obliged to pay compensation to three members of the Pussy Riot art group-Maria Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Ekaterina Samusevich — in the case of "punk prayer" in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in 2012. Alekhine and Tolokonnikova needs to obtain €16 thousand each, Samusevich — €5 thousand. More than €11 thousand Russian authorities should pay to cover legal costs. The court ordered the authorities to seek compensation for criminal prosecution and "inhuman" conditions of detention.

The ECHR found that the punk prayer case violated four articles of the European Convention on human rights — the prohibition of torture, the right to personal liberty and security, and the right to a fair trial and freedom of expression.

We are talking about the events that took place in 2012. In February of that year, five participants Pussy Riot entered the temple of Christ the Savior and arranged a so-called punk prayer. Three participants were detained. They were charged with insulting the feelings of believers and hooliganism. They were all sentenced to two years imprisonment. Later, in the case of Samusevich, the Moscow city court changed the punishment to a suspended sentence. Alekhina and Tolokonnikova were released on amnesty in 2013.
