OREANDA-NEWS. During preparing for a second reading, the draft law on amendments to the Constitution of Russia was proposed to add a number of new clauses, including the provision for persons who held the presidency the right to lifelong membership in the Federation Council.

The ex-president would be able to take the post of senator after the end of his term of office, or after the early termination of office in case of resignation. However, he may refuse to work in the upper house of the national parliament.

The head of the State Duma Committee on State Building and Legislation, Pavel Krasheninnikov, explained the reasonability of the proposal by saying that the politicians who served as president of Russia “have tremendous experience and knowledge, which can be of obvious benefit in the framework of the activities of the Federation Council”.
