OREANDA-NEWS. On October 15, President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Syllouris, under pressure from the public officially announced his resignation from the parliament amid a scandal connected to violations in the implementation of the citizenship-by-investment program.

The politician, who had previously promised to terminate his duties from the coming Monday until the completion of the investigation, announced his decision in a specially distributed statement. He noted that his words about holding his post till the next week were misinterpreted and that he firmly believes that he has not violated the laws of the country.

Earlier, the TV channel Al Jazeera reported that Syllouris, together with a parliamentarian from the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus, Christakis Giovannis, allegedly expressed their readiness to help a Chinese businessman, sentenced to 7 years in prison for money laundering, to obtain Cypriot citizenship. After that, the parliamentary political parties of Cyprus demanded the resignation of Syllouris.
