OREANDA-NEWS. A new coup attempt has been made in Sudan. Amid the crisis that has been heating up for many weeks, the military broke into the houses of government members on Monday morning, October 25, and took under house arrest the Prime Minister of Sudan Abdullah Hamduk, most of the ministers, one of the members of the ruling Sovereign Council and a large number of members of pro-government parties.

The airport of the Sudanese capital Khartoum is closed, the entrances to the city are blocked by the military, the Internet does not work throughout the country. In Khartoum, demonstrators blocked roads. In recent weeks, protests by various groups have not stopped in Sudan. Some demanded the transfer of power to civilian authorities, while others wanted the army to remove the current transitional Government.

In Sudan, after the overthrow of the authoritarian ruler Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, the so-called Sovereign Council, consisting of civilians and military, came to power. Since then, the country has been going through a fragile transition period, which in 2023 should end with the coming to power of a civilian government. The already difficult situation in Sudan is exacerbated by high inflation, economic difficulties and deep political differences.

In the past few months, the Sovereign Council has launched a number of economic reforms to get the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to write off debts. As a result of these reforms, among other things, state subsidies for fuel were abolished. This and many other measures caused widespread distrust of the current government among the population.
