OREANDA-NEWS. The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin that he condemns the use of migrants by the Belarusian authorities against EU countries. The conversation between the two politicians took place on Wednesday, September 8, Michel said on Twitter.

«I discussed with the President of Russia the latest events in Afghanistan and their impact on the entire region. The EU and Russia are jointly interested in regional stability», the head of the European Council wrote. According to him, the priority of the European Union is to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan, the fight against terrorism and drug smuggling, as well as guarantees of human rights, including the rights of women and minorities.

«I confirmed my support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and Georgia. We exchanged views on the prospects of the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement — this requires confidence building and dialogue. I condemned the use of irregular migration by Belarus against EU member states», Charles Michel added.

Earlier, on September 2-3, the EU foreign ministers at their informal meeting condemned the «cynical use of migrants and refugees» by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko to create pressure on the borders of Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. The European Union said that they are working on the fifth package of sanctions against Belarus.
