OREANDA-NEWS. After processing the protocols from 100 % of the polling stations, the Central Electoral Bureau of Romania reports that the incumbent President Klaus Iohannis is leading the second round of the election of the head of Romania, gaining 66.05 % of the vote. His rival, ex-prime minister Viorica Dancila receives 33.95 %.

The second round of presidential elections in Romania was held in the country and abroad on November 24. Romanian citizens elected head of state for the next five years.

Iohannis gained 37.82 % in the first round, Dancila received 22.26 % of the vote; so they went into the second round. Earlier, the exit poll data showed that in the second round, Iohannis received 66.5 %, Dancila gained 33.5 %.

In his election campaign, Iohannis relied on the construction of “strong Romania.” Being a president, he promised to reconsider Romania’s accession to the euro area and the Schengen area, he also intends to develop the European Neighborhood Policy and strengthen strategic partnership with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the United States of America.

According to Agerpres news agency, Iohannis said that he accepts the winning in the elections with “gladness, gratitude and modesty,” and also promised to be president for all citizens of the country.

In October 2019, the Romanian parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the country’s social democratic government. Voting initiators criticized Prime Minister Dancila for the lack of infrastructure and healthcare projects, as well as the introduction of amendments to the country’s tax code, which negatively impacted investments from abroad.
