OREANDA-NEWS. The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, Vladimir Zhirinovsky proposed abolishing the vote over constitutional amendments against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic. “Everyone says about a referendum on the Constitution. Maybe we should stop the topic? A presidential decree has been signed, all legal procedures have been followed. And maybe, by the end of the year, restrictions in the regions will continue. The topic can be removed,” Zhirinovsky said.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, being asked to comment on this proposal, said that “there is an unambiguous position of the president on this issue.” He previously stated that voting on the Constitution is not a “mere formality.” “If people consider that the adoption of the amendments is impractical, then this will happen,” Peskov explained.

Initially, a nationwide vote on constitutional amendments was scheduled for April 22. Later, President Vladimir Putin decided to postpone it because of the coronavirus outbreak.
