OREANDA-NEWS. The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation decided to liquidate the public movement “For Human Rights”, which is headed by well-known political and civil activist Lev Ponomaryov.

According to information agency RIA Novosti, the lawsuit was filed by the Ministry of Justice which pointed out that this movement was recognized a foreign agent and was repeatedly held administratively liable.

After the decision was made, Ponomaryov told to Interfax agency that the movement would continue to operate in Russia, despite an adjudication. “Of course, we will continue our work. We will keep our main backbone. The work will continue both in Moscow and throughout Russia,” he assured.

Lawyer Sergei Andropov told to journalists that “For Human Rights” movement will appeal the decision of the Supreme Court on liquidation, and then will bring an action before the court to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg “in connection with the violation of at least Article 11 of the European Convention (Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights which protects freedom of assembly and association),” the lawyer said. Andropov considers the decision of the judges to be “absolutely illegal”. According to him, the court “did not hear and did not take into account” the arguments of the representatives of the movement.

“For Human Rights” was created in 1997. It includes several dozen regional and local human rights organizations. The goal of organization is “formation of a rule-of-law state and the development of civil society in Russia.”
