OREANDA-NEWS. On November 26, Reuters information agency, citing diplomatic sources, wrote that Turkey refused to support North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s plan to protect the Baltic countries and Poland in the event of an attack of Russia. According to journalists’ information, Ankara wants more support from the alliance in the fight against Kurds in Syria.

“Ankara has told its NATO envoy not to sign off on the plan and is taking a tough line in meetings and in private conversations, demanding the alliance recognize the YPG (People’s Defense Units. – Ed.) as terrorists in the formal wording,” the material cites the sources.

The agency notes that this dispute became one more evidence of serious disagreements in NATO, and Turkey’s position could prevent the alliance from strengthening its positions in the Baltic states and Poland.

“They (the Turks) are taking eastern Europeans hostage, blocking approval of this military planning until they get concessions,” the source at NATO said to Reuters.

Another interlocutor of the agency considers the behavior of Turkish authorities to be disruptive.

NATO countries have repeatedly stated the existing of Russian threat. At the same time, Moscow noted that this wording is used to justify the buildup of the alliance’s military forces at the borders of the Russian Federation, although Moscow does not intend to attack any country.

In September 2019, it became known that the former president of Latvia, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, called for the unification of the forces of the Baltic countries, Poland and NATO to confront Russia, which ceased to hide its imperial ambitions.
