OREANDA-NEWS. Former president of the European Council, head of the European People’s Party, Donald Tusk, proposed nominating Belarusian oppositionists Siarhei and Svistlana Tsikhanouski for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I believe it will be a strong signal if the EU nominates Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and her husband Sergei, who is still in prison, for the Nobel Peace Prize, to pay tribute to all Belarusians engaged in this most peaceful movement in years,” Tusk wrote on his Twitter page.

Siarhei Tsikhanouski tried to register as a presidential candidate in Belarus; his wife Sviatlana replaced her spouse after he was rejected from registration and arrested. According to the official data, she gained about 10 % of votes.

Tusk served as President of the European Council in 2014–2019. He was an active supporter of the broadest possible support from the EU for Ukraine and a tough sanctions policy towards Russia.
