OREANDA-NEWS. The US House of Representatives voted for impeachment of President Donald Trump on two charges: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Thus, Trump became the third president in history to be impeached. However, as with other heads of state, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, there is every indication that Trump will not be removed from power by the Senate.

Democrats announced the start of an impeachment investigation in late September. The reason was the complaint of an informant about the telephone conversation with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. An unnamed intelligence official sounded the alarm due to fears that the US leader asked the head of the foreign state to begin an investigation against his political opponent, former vice president Joe Biden, amid the freezing of nearly 400 million dollars of military assistance to Ukraine. Democrats said the president violated the US Constitution and threatened national security.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said that on December 18, he asked Trump how he was getting on. The leader of the country replied that he was doing well, except for the fact that impeachment was declared.

At the trial in the upper house of US Congress, senators will be assigned the role of a jury. They will not be able to lead a discussion, but will just have to silently listen to the arguments of Trump’s accusers from the House of Representatives and counter-arguments of the President’s defense. At the end of the process, a vote will be held. For the removal of Trump from power, two-thirds of the votes of senators will be required.
