OREANDA-NEWS. US Senator John Thune proposed an amendment to the defense budget for fiscal year 2020–2021, which would allow the United States to purchase Russian anti-aircraft missile systems S-400 from Turkey.

The amendment was among more than 500 proposals of the Senate prepared for inclusion in the budget.

According to the magazine Defense News, in this way Thune tried to break the deadlock on the issue of joint production of fighter jets F-35 with Turkey.

However, in the same document, senators Jim Risch and Robert Menendez proposed another amendment providing for sanctions for the purchase of S-400 from Russia by Turkey. Measures should be introduced under the Countering America’s Adversaries through Sanctions Act.

The amendments should be discussed in the House of Representatives. Defense News notes that there is no guarantee that any of them will be included in the defense budget of the United States.
