Pyotr Tolstoy Believes That Russia Should Be Ready to Leave the CE
OREANDA-NEWS. Deputy Speaker of the State Duma, head of the delegation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation to PACE, Pyotr Tolstoy, believes that Russia should be ready to leave the Council of Europe in the event of a trilateral procedure for responding to violation of the charter in relation to the Russian Federation. He made such a statement during a round table "25 years of Russia's membership in the Council of Europe: cooperation or confrontation."
As Tolstoy said, discussing the actions of the Russian Federation in case of launching a trilateral procedure: “First, we must separately reconsider our role in this organization. Second, we must be ready to leave it if the trilateral procedure is launched against our country. I think we cannot tolerate this humiliating story. "
As Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said, "Russia is ready to work in the Council of Europe on the basis of its charter, but you don't need to test its patience, without Russia the organization will lose its meaning of existence."
Russia joined the Council of Europe on February 28, 1996. Two years later, on March 30, Moscow ratified the European Convention on Human Rights. From the moment of joining the Council of Europe in Russia, among other things, a moratorium on the death penalty was introduced, the institution of ombudsmen appeared, and the jury began to work.
