OREANDA-NEWS. Russia has increased the number of Russian border troops serving in Armenia, Russian Ambassador to Yerevan Sergey Kopyrkin said.

«The Russian Federation, within the framework of fulfilling it's allied obligations, makes a significant contribution to ensuring the security of fraternal Armenia. In particular, the number of Russian border troops has been increased, and considerable material, technical and financial resources have been allocated to support their activities», the embassy's press service said.

During his visit to the Syunik region bordering Azerbaijan, Kopyrkin met with the head of the region, Melikset Poghosyan, and the parties discussed the situation in the southernmost region of Armenia, including the situation in its border areas, the diplomatic mission added.

The Governor of Syunik region expressed gratitude to the Russian Federation and it's leadership for stopping the bloodshed during the Karabakh war in the fall of 2020 and for the subsequent invaluable contribution to post-conflict reconstruction. The governor also praised the service of Russian border guards in the region.

It is reported that during the conversation, the current state and prospects for expanding cooperation between the Syunik region and the subjects of the Russian Federation were considered.The Ambassador assured that Russia will continue to promote the realization of the economic potential of the Syunik region, including in the tourism sector.

After the war in Karabakh in the fall of 2020, Russian border guards began to serve on sections of Armenian roads in the Syunik region, which, in the logic of Soviet-era maps, came under the control of Azerbaijan.
