OREANDA-NEWS. The victory of Bashar al-Assad in the presidential elections in Syria speaks of the citizens' support for his policy of peaceful settlement in the country. This was announced to RIA Novosti on Friday by a member of the international committee of the Federation Council Sergei Tsekov.

Assad won during the presidential elections, gaining more than 95% of the vote.

The Russian politician said: "This is a convincing victory, which speaks of the support of the Syrian people for their president. This makes it possible to continue multifaceted measures to establish peace and tranquility in Syrian territory. It gives hope for the unification of the Syrian lands."

He noted that Assad had established himself as a strong president who did not leave his country in a difficult period, he knows how to find allies and friends, "does not bow his head before enemies."

Commenting on criticism from Western countries regarding the Syrian elections, Tsekov noted that the West "in their countries does not recognize flagrant violations, as it was during the election campaign in the United States." But at the same time, Western politicians criticize other states that live by their own internal laws and on which "they are trying to impose their will."

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev also believes that the victory of Bashar al-Assad in the presidential elections in Syria indicates that the people support the continuation of the political process in the country. The politician said this to RIA Novosti on May 28. According to the senator, "for the Syrians, he is the personification of change for the better, the restoration of statehood and the cessation of hostilities in most of the country."
