OREANDA-NEWS Kremlin commented on Trump's words about the Golan Heights.  The leader of the United States said yesterday that it was time for the United States to recognize Israeli sovereignty over this territory, which is of "extreme strategic importance" for Tel Aviv. “Of course, such appeals can significantly destabilize the already tense situation in the Middle East. In any case, this idea in itself does not in any way contribute to the goals and objectives of a Middle East settlement, but rather the opposite,” said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian president. He added that he hoped that the call would not lead to consequences

Also, the Trump initiative was criticized in Brussels, Damascus and Tehran, representatives of the countries reminded supporters of this idea that Washington is violating international law.

However, experts are not surprised by such statements by the Head of the White House.

The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, Konstantin Kosachev, believes that the statement by the US President is not surprising, given the "undisguised pro-Israel stance of the White House," which has already recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel despite the position of the world community and the UN.

"Trump again responds to an internal request: in February, congressmen and senators: Republicans Mike Gallagher, Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton introduced a bill according to which" the US’s policy should be recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights ", and in March the same team suggested the reason for such actions is at odds with the position of the UN and the whole world: they say, Washington should respond to the "Iranian aggression" that threatens Israel", - the senator believes.

The annexation was invalidated by the UN Security Council resolution 497 on December 17, 1981.
