OREANDA-NEWSWashington believes that Moscow uses the conflict in Libya "to the detriment of the Libyan people". This follows a press release circulated by the Department of State on Monday.

According to the document, on November 24, US representatives, including Victoria Coates, senior director of the White House’s National Security Council for the Middle East, and Richard Norland, head of the American diplomatic mission in Libya, met Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), to "discuss steps on the cessation of hostilities and the political settlement of the" situation.

"Officials emphasized the full support of the United States for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya, and also expressed serious concern about Russia's use of this conflict to the detriment of the Libyan people", the statement said. As the US Foreign Office noted, the meeting followed recent talks with "Tripoli-based officials", whose goal the State Department sees as "creating a common basis for progress between the parties on issues that separate them in the context of the ceasefire movement".
