OREANDA-NEWS. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on November 27 that Russia was surprised to see foreign reactions to amendments to the law on information. Western media partners have long been warned that sooner or later measures will be taken in response to discrimination against Russian content on the Internet in order to ensure that the rights of Russian media are respected.

Zakharova added that so far all the amendments that have caused indignation in foreign media are still under discussion. At the same time, she noted that all the adjustments are aimed at introducing a mechanism of responsibility for unjustified discrimination in a particular area of materials of the Russian media.

Maria Zakharova said that it is important to remind Russia's Western partners, who are now outraged that Russia was not the first to develop measures to limit the impact of large Western platforms on content. Such mechanisms are being developed in the EU space, discussed at other international platforms, in particular, in the United States.

The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that for the Russian side these measures are forced and retaliatory. According to her, they are associated with an incessant series of deletions of accounts, materials, blocking of Russian content, lowering it in the search results of mainly Western transnational platforms. She added that Russia would like to know why this is happening.

It is for these reasons, as the representative of the Foreign Ministry explains, that in order to protect the Russian media, their intellectual property, rights, mechanisms of responsibility of digital platforms have been proposed.
