OREANDA-NEWSThe Ministry of Economic Development (MED) proposed to allocate 2.1 billion rubles. to create in Russia an analogue of the American service GitHub, intended for hosting IT projects, storing open source programs and their joint development. In 2018, Microsoft spent $ 7.5 billion on the purchase of GitHub, but the Ministry of Economic Development fears that in the event of a new tightening of sanctions to Russian developers, access to the service may be turned off, Kommersant reports.

In this regard, within the framework of the federal project “Artificial Intelligence”, it's proposed to create a Russian analogue of GitHub already in 2021 by copying into it the most popular programs from open sources abroad.

Explaining the importance of the GitHub purchase transaction in the summer of 2018, Microsoft announced that 28 million developers are learning, sharing best practices and collaborating “on creating the future” on this platform. At the end of 2019, the GitHub service estimated the number of developers collaborating with it at 40 million, of which 10 million joined the project in the last year.

At the same time, 80% of all users connect from outside the United States. According to GitHub, most foreign users live in China, Russia is in eighth place in terms of their number.
